FLAPS AND GRAFTS
What Do They Do?
Flaps and grafts are fundamental reconstructive surgery techniques. They serve to address deformities caused by tissue defects, typically of skin, soft tissue, bone, or a combination of these.
Are You a Candidate?
If you have a significant tissue defect or if one is anticipated as a result of a planned treatment (cancer surgery, for example), you may be a candidate.
What Procedures are Performed?
Procedures are designed to restore form and function. Reconstructive surgeries using flaps and grafts range from small local skin flaps to skin, cartilage and bone grafts to complex regional or free-tissue transfer techniques. Free-tissue transfer involves moving a block of tissue (containing skin, muscle, bone or a combination of these) from one area of the body to another. It requires re-establishment of a blood supply by dividing small blood vessels and sewing them to arteries and veins in the area the flap is to be place.
Insurance?
Reconstructive flap and graft surgery is commonly covered by insurance.
