FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
BREAST AUGMENTATION QUESTIONS
Will I be able to breast feed after breast augmentation?
Implants are unlikely to affect your ability to breast-feed.
What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?
Naturally, every surgical procedure involves some risk. By employing best practices Dr. Slenkovich reduces these risks to a minimum. In addition, problems with breast augmentation surgery are quite unusual. However, the risks, which are associated with this procedure generally, include: bleeding, infection, nerve injury, changes in sensitivity to the breast, and scaring. Significant complications are rare, but will be discussed with you in full by
Dr. Slenkovich prior to your surgery.
Are there alternatives to breast enlargement other than implants?
Not really. Exercise will only increase the size of the chest muscles and will not look like larger breasts. Other treatments, such as supplements or pills, are not effective.
What type of implants do you use?
Dr. Slenkovich offers both saline and silicone breast implants in a variety of sizes and shapes. Dr. Slenkovich will discuss with you which option will be best for you.
Will I need to replace my implants after time?
Saline implants are expected to last many years, with current data showing that less than 10% of women have had an implant deflation at 7 years after surgery. Occasionally implants fail. Some patients may also choose to replace implants in the future.
Will my implants rupture if I fall on my chest?
No. Breast implants are designed to tolerate compression and are unlikely to rupture except under extreme circumstances, and only very rarely is this seen.
Where will the doctor make an incision to put in the implants in?
There are four main sites for inserting implants: areola, infra-mammary fold (crease beneath the breast), armpit and belly button. Dr. Slenkovich normally chooses to insert implants by making a small incision in the infra-mammary fold.
Does Dr. Slenkovich place the implants below the muscle or above the muscle?
Dr. Slenkovich normally places the implant beneath the pectoral muscle.
Can I tan after breast surgery?
You will not want to tan right away because of scarring. Tanning will not affect the implants.
LIPOSUCTION/TUMMY TUCK QUESTIONS
What is the difference between tummy tuck and liposuction?
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is an operation used to rejuvenate the abdominal area. The doctor both tightens the muscles, which may be stretched out from childbirth, and removes the loose excess skin. Generally, an incision is made on the bikini line, then the muscles and the fatty tissue are pulled tight and the excess skin is removed
Liposuction, unlike abdominoplasty, just removes the fat without any tightening of the muscle or removal of the skin.
Will fat return to areas where I have had liposuction?
Although fat cells are removed with liposuction, fat can return if the patient puts on weight.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
A healthy person who is reasonably close to his/her normal weight is an ideal candidate for liposuction. For patients who are obese, there are other options.
If I have liposuction, will my skin be saggy?
Liposuction won’t improve the appearance of the skin, but the elasticity of the skin will not be affected by liposuction.
FACIAL PROCEDURE QUESTIONS
What is Botox?
Botox is a popular non-surgical treatment for facial wrinkles of the forehead, between the eyes, and in the "crows feet" areas on the upper third of the face. Botox acts on the muscles, temporarily disabling them so that facial lines smooth out. The effects of Botox last about 6 months.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is the exfoliation of the top layer of skin using sodium bicarbonate crystals. A series of 3 to 6 treatments is recommended. Microdermabrasion reduces lines and age spots and smoothes the look and feel of your skin.
GENERAL QUESTIONS
When can I return to work? When can I begin exercising? How soon can I go skiing?
Each procedure has its own “back to normal activity” requirements. To check out the requirements for any specific procedure, click on that procedure. And always Dr. Slenkovich and his staff will be pleased to answer any other questions you have or to be more specific on the requirements for your procedure.
Is there a “right” age for plastic surgery?
There is no “right” age for plastic surgery. Generally, plastic surgery is an elective procedure. Dr. Slenkovich works with patients from infancy on, depending upon the specific problem. He and his staff advise each individual patient of the risks and benefits of each procedure, what happens during the procedure, and how much time will be needed for recovery.
Is plastic surgery painful?
Patients’ pain tolerances differ significantly. Dr. Slenkovich is an expert in pain management and prescribes the appropriate pain medication for each individual patient, including during the recovery time.. Most patients will not suffer any pain.
Will my insurance company pay for plastic surgery?
Not in most cases. If the procedure is done for reasons other than cosmetic (i.e. breast reduction, or body lift after gastric bypass), insurance normally does pay. We will write a letter requesting authorization from your insurance company and will keep you apprised of the status of your authorization. We also encourage patients to call the insurance company regarding the status of their authorization.
FINANCING QUESTIONS
Do you accept payments?
Many of our patients choose to finance their procedures. Please do not hesitate to ask our Patient Coordinator about financing. You can finance all or part of the cost of your cosmetic surgery, and we have several companies we trust to take excellent care of our patients' financial needs.
Some patients choose to take advantage of credit card perks such as mileage, etc. We accept Visa and MasterCard. Our Patient Coordinator will be happy to explore which option will be best for you.
Will I look natural after surgery?
A natural look can be achieved through plastic surgery. Dr. Slenkovich will discuss with each patient the results they hope to achieve and what to expect.
