Botox Injections

What Do Botox Injections Do? Botox, or botulism toxin, is a nonsurgical treatment for facial wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyes, and in the "crows feet" areas on the upper third of the face.

How Does Botox Work? Botox temporarily weakens the muscles of facial expression in the forehead and between the eyes (and crows feet if necessary) so that the pull of the muscles relaxes and the overlying skin flattens.

Is the Effect of Botox Permanent? Botox is temporary. Re-injection is typically needed within four to twelve months.

Are There More Permanent Alternatives to Botox? More permanent options include fat grafting or brow lift. Injection of collagen, while not permanent, is also an alternative.

Are You a Candidate for Botox Injections? If you have wrinkles on your forehead, between your eyes, or crow's feet around your eyes, you may be a canidate for Botox.

How Is the Procedure Performed? Botox is prepared fresh on the day of the injection. With a very tiny needle, small amounts of Botox are injected into the muscles to be paralyzed. Botox takes just about a half a second to inject.

What is Recovery Like? Discomfort is minimal and lasts only a few seconds. There are no recongnized permanent side effects to Botox. Occasionally, the tiny needle may puncture a small blood vessel during the injection, and a small black and blue mark may develop. This can last from five to ten days and can require makeup to cover. If any Botox reaches a facial muscle not being treated, partial weakness of that muscle may last for several months.
