Frequently Asked Questions About Permanent Make-Up

Q: What Exactly IS Permanent Make-Up and How Is It Applied?
A: Permanent make-up is a form of tattooing. Completely natural pigments are implanted with a fine needle beneath the epidermis into the dermal layer. The technique has been medically developed and the pigments have been specially formulated for safe, permanent, cosmetic application. The colors are custom-blended for the most perfect match and most natural appearance possible.

Q: How “Permanent” Is Permanent Make-Up?
A: The length of time that permanent make-up lasts varies for each individual. The average is from 1–8 years. Factors that affect the result include: the color chosen, the natural pigment of the skin, sun exposure, and compliance with after-care instructions. Permanent cosmetics do not wash off or smear, but they do fade over time. Periodic maintenance such as color-enhancement is suggested.

Q: Is permanent make-up safe?
A: Yes. Only single-use, sterilized needles are used. All guidelines are strictly followed in accordance with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) guidelines.

Q: Is it painful?
A: A topical anesthetic is used which minimizes discomfort considerably. The process is far more comfortable than most people anticipate. Oral Sedation and/or nerve blocks are also options to reduce anxiety and discomfort. Please see Dr. Slenkovich's answer on RealSelf.com where he comments on this issue.

Q: How long does it take to apply permanent make-up?
A: Each procedure usually takes between one and two hours. A follow-up appointment is scheduled for four to six weeks after the initial application.

Q: Will I need to take off from work?
A: No. Ice is used to reduce any swelling, and antibiotic cream is applied for a couple of days. There is usually a minimum of redness and swelling.

Q: Can I wear make-up after having a procedure done?
A: We suggest that no mascara or other eye makeup be used for 7 days after any permanent eye make-up, and no lipstick for 7 days after lip coloring.

Q: Can I have permanent cosmetics applied if I’m on medication?
A: Yes, unless you are taking steroids or blood thinners.

Q: How will I know what color to pick?
A: We will guide you in picking just the right color, taking into consideration your natural skin color, hair color and eye color. A soft, natural color is always preferred.
