Renuvion Skin Tightening in Denver

Renuvion is a skin-tightening treatment we use as an adjunct to liposuction at Colorado Plastic Surgery Center. During the same procedure, liposuction removes the fat and Renuvion tightens the skin that would otherwise remain loose. Renuvion is designed for patients with mild skin laxity and for the loose skin that is often created by liposuction itself.

Why We Combine Renuvion with Liposuction

Skin tightening has historically been the missing piece of liposuction. Fat removal alone can either reveal loose skin that was already there or create some laxity as the volume beneath the skin is reduced. Patients who wanted liposuction but had marginal skin quality were often told they either had to accept loose skin as a trade-off or proceed with a larger skin-removal surgery such as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), a brachioplasty (arm lift), or a thigh lift. Renuvion changed that.

Because Renuvion is delivered through the same small incisions used for liposuction, the two are performed together during one procedure at our surgery center. Liposuction handles the fat. Renuvion handles the skin. The result is a smoother contour and tighter overlying skin from a single procedure and a single recovery.

What Is Renuvion?

Renuvion is an FDA-approved device that tightens skin from beneath the surface, as compared to external devices (such as lasers, ultrasound, and topical radiofrequency) that work through the skin surface. It uses a controlled radiofrequency (RF) waveform to convert helium gas into a stream of energy (j-plasma), which is delivered through a small cannula placed just under the skin. The helium plasma heats the connective tissue enough to contract it on contact, then cools the surrounding area almost instantly, so the surgical target is precise and the overlying skin is protected.

Two things happen at once to the treatment area: the tissue contracts immediately, and new collagen production is stimulated. Contraction is what you see and feel right away. The collagen response continues to remodel the treated area for 6 to 9 months, with the final skin tightening effect typically not visible until 9 to 12 months after surgery.

Renuvion does not remove fat. That is what liposuction does. What Renuvion adds is the ability to address loose skin that was already present or that gets created by the liposuction itself, so the same procedure achieves both a smoother contour and tighter skin.

When Renuvion Is Useful

Renuvion is worth discussing at a consultation in situations such as:

  • Liposuction for a patient whose skin quality is borderline for liposuction alone
  • Body contouring after weight loss for some patients when paired with skin removal surgeries (such as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), a brachioplasty (arm lift), or a thigh lift)
  • Body contouring after pregnancy where mild skin laxity is present alongside stubborn fat
  • Liposuction where we anticipate that fat removal will produce some skin laxity (what plastic surgeons sometimes call "impending laxity")
  • Refining the neck and jawline in combination with submental (under-chin) liposuction
  • Improving a previous liposuction result where the skin did not retract as fully as hoped

Are You a Candidate?

The right Renuvion candidate is someone we are already planning to treat with liposuction who has mild skin laxity at the treatment area (or a reasonable chance of developing some laxity once the fat is removed). Candidacy is decided at consultation, during which Dr. Roider or Dr. Slenkovich examines the treatment area and evaluates three things: existing skin looseness, skin elasticity, and the likelihood that removing the fat will leave some laxity behind. If Renuvion will add meaningful improvement to your result, we recommend it.

For moderate or severe skin laxity, a skin-removal surgery is the better choice: an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), a brachioplasty (arm lift), or a thigh lift, alone or as part of a post-weight-loss body-contouring plan. We will tell you clearly which category you fall into.

Renuvion FAQs

Does Renuvion remove fat?

No. Renuvion is a skin-tightening treatment, not a fat-removal treatment. What removes the fat is the liposuction we perform in the same session. Renuvion is what addresses the loose skin that was already there or that gets created by the liposuction.

Is Renuvion FDA approved?

Yes. Renuvion is FDA-approved for skin contraction following liposuction and for contraction of subcutaneous soft tissue.

What happens on the day of the procedure?

Renuvion is performed at the Surgery Center of Colorado, our private state-licensed ambulatory surgery center in Littleton, Colorado, in the same session as your liposuction. Most patients are treated under general anesthesia or IV sedation with local anesthesia depending on the treatment area. Liposuction is performed first to remove the fat, refine the contour, and create space for the Renuvion cannula to be placed under the skin. Renuvion uses the same small incisions (typically less than one centimeter) to tighten the overlying skin. Total procedure time is usually 1 to 4 hours depending on how large the treatment areas is. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after the procedure.

What is recovery like?

Because Renuvion is added to the liposuction, the recovery is a liposuction recovery. Expect swelling and bruising in the treated areas during the first days. A compression garment is worn as directed by your surgeon after the procedure; the timing and duration depend on the areas treated. Most patients return to desk work within about a week. Light exercise typically resumes at around three weeks and strenuous activity at around six weeks. Residual swelling can take 8 to 12 weeks to fully resolve.

How is Renuvion different from external or laser skin tightening?

External devices (laser, ultrasound, and radiofrequency treatments such as Ultherapy and Sofwave) work through the surface of the skin. They can be useful for very mild laxity but are limited in how much tightening they can achieve because the energy has to travel through the skin surface to reach the tissue below. Renuvion is delivered beneath the skin through a small cannula (the same cannula path used for liposuction), which allows more meaningful tightening as it provides immediate tightening and collagen stimulation. Renuvion is more involved than external/topical treatments because it requires an incision and sedation. This is also reflected in recovery, which is more significant than external skin tightening devices but is less involved than a skin-removal surgery, such as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), a brachioplasty (arm lift), or a thigh lift. Renuvion tightens the skin that is there rather than removing it, which is why it works well for mild laxity but not for moderate or severe laxity.

When will I see full results?

Some tightening is visible immediately after the procedure due to the thermal energy contracting the fibrous network underneath your skin. The treated area continues to improve for 6 to 9 months as new collagen forms and remodels the tissue. The final skin tightening effect is typically not visible until 9 to 12 months following surgery.

Can Renuvion be used on the face or neck?

Yes, and it works well in combination with submental (under-chin) liposuction to tighten the neck and jawline. If a face or neck application is what interests you, we discuss that specifically at consultation.

How long do the results last?

Renuvion produces long-lasting results to the treated skin. The tissue contracts on contact, and new collagen continues to form for 6 to 9 months. Results can be maintained for years when you keep a stable weight and protect the treated skin from sun damage. Renuvion does not stop the effects of gravity or aging on the treated area over time, and significant weight fluctuations can affect the result the same way they affect any body-contoured area.

Will there be scars?

Renuvion uses the same small incisions as the liposuction it is paired with. These are typically less than one centimeter and are placed inconspicuously. Incision marks continue to mature and fade for up to a year.

What are the risks?

Renuvion has a defined safety profile. Because the helium plasma cools the tissue almost instantaneously, the risk of burn is lower than with some other energy devices, but potential complications still include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, changes in skin sensation, uneven tightening, and rarely burns or scarring. We review your specific risk factors at consultation.
